Our History
The premises were originally built in 1876 by John Keeton and we still have detailed records and complete accounts of funerals dating back to that era.
The house was named 'Cyprus Cottage', which can still be seen engraved in stone on the front of the property.
John Keeton passed away in April 1915. However, the business had already been passed on and established as 'W. J. Hoyland' by William James Hoyland on June 10th, 1912, which is clearly marked in the records from that year.
The business traded as 'Undertaker, Joiner and Property Repairer', serving Intake village and the surrounding areas. The coffins were all hand made on site.
The workshop building on the premises still exists today as part of our history.
William James Hoyland passed away in January 1959. His eldest son Hugh then continued to develop the establishment further. Hugh's nephew, Ralph showed a keen interest from a young age, and with Hugh's guidance, Ralph learnt all aspects of the business.
When Hugh Hoyland passed away in April 1985, Ralph continued to build upon his uncle's hard work, carrying the business forward with his extensive knowledge, professionalism and dedicated love of his job until his untimely passing in May 2009.
Now over 109 years old and in its fourth generation, W. J. Hoyland & Co. Funeral Directors continues with Ralph's daughter, Rebecca and her supportive team, which includes her brother-in-law, Warrick and sister Riana. Aiming to maintain the good name and reputation created by their predecessors.
W. J. Hoyland & Co. Funeral Directors is still an independent, family owned establishment, serving all parts of Sheffield and the surrounding areas. Providing you with a personal and caring service with traditional values during your time of need.
